About This Program

This instructional program is designed to prepare students for entry level through journeyman employment in the commercial HVAC trade depending on the level completed. Students register for one level at a time and Level 1 must be completed prior to Level 2 Level 2 prior to Level 3 and Level 3 prior to Level 4. Each level is basically 32 weeks and is offered once a year beginning in the fall at a rate of $1060 for Level 1 and $675 for Levels 2-4. Students may complete one or more levels as desired unless enrolled in the apprenticeship program in which all four levels must be completed. Classes are taught at the MS Construction Education Foundation Training Centers located throughout the state including in-company programs. Level 1 course includes basic core construction skills and craft specific topics such as Tools of the Trade; Copper and Plastic Piping Practices; Soldering and Brazing; Ferrous Metal Piping Practices; Basic Electricity; Introduction to Cooling; Introduction to Heating. Meets requirements of Year 1 of 4-year apprenticeship program if OJT is met. Level 2 course includes Air Distribution Systems; Chimneys Vents and Flues; Maintenance Skills; Alternating Current; Basic Electronics; Electric Heating; Control Circuit Troubleshooting; Accessories and Optional Equipment; Metering Devices; Compressors; Heat Pumps; Leak Detection Evacuation Recovery and Charging. Meets requirements of Year 2 of 4-year apprenticeship program if OJT is met. Level 3 course includes Planned Maintenance; Troubleshooting Gas Heating; Electric Heating; Oil Heating; Cooling; Heat Pumps; Electronic Controls; Hydronic Heating and Cooling Systems; Airside Systems; Air Properties and Air System Balancing. Meets requirements of Year 3 of 4-year apprenticeship program if OJT is met. Level 4 course includes Construction Drawings and Specification; Indoor Air Quality; Energy Conservation Equipment; Building Management Systems; Water Treatment; System Startup and Shutdown; Heating and Cooling System Design. All programs meet or exceed the requirements of a 4 Year apprenticeship program. All MCEF programs are taught by industry professionals with journeyman or master level experience in the trade.
