About This Program

Mental Health/psychiatric technicalThis program prepares students to take the Mental Health Technician Certification exam through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA). A Mental Health Technician Certification (MHTC) allows candidates to participate in a variety of healthcare settings. Mental health technicians also known as psychiatric aides or psychiatric technicians are medical support personnel who provide direct personal care to psychiatric patients. Their work consists of monitoring patients and reporting abnormal disturbed or disruptive behavior. They also record vital signs clean patient rooms and assist patients with bathing grooming and dressing. At times these aides educate patients about self-care encourage participation in social and therapeutic activities and restrain suicidal or violent patients. They might also confer with medical staff about treatment and lead group therapy sessions. Technicians perform their duties under the supervision of nurses social workers psychologists and psychiatrists.This program will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to enter into an entry-level position to effectively promote empathy support and healing when working with people diagnosed with a mental illness. The student will gain person-centeredness. Learn the five modules: The Foundation for Human to-Human Caring in Behavioral Health Healthcare Must Haves Understanding Mental Health Diagnosis and Care of the Whole Person Human to Human Relating and a clinical externship will complete the course.Additionally the student will be trained and certified in Basic Life Support and Handle with CareA Mental Health Technician or Pyschiatric technician care for people who have mental illness and developmental disabilities. Others work with patients undergoing rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction. The work of psychiatric technicians and aides varies with the types of patients they work with.These trained technicians may perform some or all the following duties depending on facility policies and state regulations. However they are not limited to just these responsibilities:Psychiatric technicians sometimes called mental health technicians typically do the following:Observe patients’ behavior listen to their concerns and record their condition.
